How to instil good values into young foster children; a short guide

 

Having values helps us make choices about what to do, between what’s right and wrong, fair or unfair. As a child’s primary carer, you are their first real teacher of values and morals. You can set great examples by following a few simple guidelines to teach good values;

1] Teach by example. Children will imitate behaviour they see in their leaders, so be wary that your behaviour will likely dictate your child’s future behaviour.

2] Read stories that teach good values and monitor what they watch on TV. Make sure TV programs are suitable for their age and don’t showcase bad morals and behaviours.

3] Teach children to learn from mistakes and talk them through values and attitudes they witness on TV or in everyday situations. This will help them learn and understand good values.

Providing foster care is a rewarding activity for many families.  We recognise the successful placement of children and young people requires particular skills including a team approach, quality and timely casework and support and care to the foster care family.

What to do if your foster child is being bullied; a short guide

 

It is important to address the issue if the child in your care is being bullied. Bullying takes many forms, including name-calling, pushing, punching, excluding them or spreading rumours. Your child may be afraid to talk about it if they are scared or think things will get worse. You can look for the signs of bullying, including; not wanting to go to school, talking about hating school, missing or damaged property, unexplained bruises, lack of friends or trouble sleeping.

In order to address the situation, be gentle and understanding. Ask them what’s making them feel bad, listen and take their feelings seriously. You may need to talk to the child’s teacher or school counsellor to work on a way to prevent further bullying.

Building self-esteem in foster children; a short guide

 

Children in foster care often come from traumatic situations, which can leave their self-esteem lacking, and can also affect their confidence and ability to cope. Self-esteem is important to feel good about yourself, and to know you’re worthy of being loved and accepted. You can help children in foster care build their self-esteem by giving them attention and affection, taking an interest in their hobbies, school work and opinions, making them feel needed, helping them trust their own feelings and by showing them you have faith in them and their decisions.

Helping young children deal with trauma, loss and grief; a short guide.

 

Many foster children may experience feelings of trauma, loss or grief while coming to terms with the abuse or neglect they may have experienced in their former homes. They may have trouble sleeping, become clingy, or have severe anxiety. Your care and support can help them deal with these issues. Other things you can do to help them cope include; reassure them that they are safe, listen and talk to them about their experiences and feelings, help them with ways to express their emotions and allow them time to work through their experiences.
