Join with Amnesty International and tell Ireland to change its abortion laws

What’s happening?

In Ireland at the moment, a young woman has been refused access to an abortion procedure despite the fact that she has been raped and is suicidal. She’s pregnant and doctors say the foetus won’t survive, but Irish law says she has to carry the pregnancy to term. Each day that the pregnancy continues reminds her of the horror she went through. Still, Irish law says she has to carry on. She needs an abortion, but she is not allowed one in Ireland. Instead, she is forced to leave the country – if she can travel. If she stays and tries to have an abortion in Ireland, she is threatened with a 14-year jail term. She is not a criminal, she has a human right to an abortion.

Ireland has one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the world. Ireland only allows women and girls access to abortion if their life is at risk. In all other cases, abortion is a crime punishable by up to 14 years in prison. About 4, 000 women and girls are forced to leave Ireland each year to access abortion services in other countries.  Some risk their health by not being able to get abortions in Ireland, and all are made to feel ashamed and like criminals for doing this.

Amnesty International’s efforts

Amnesty International is heading up an effort to write to the head of Irish government, the Taoiseach, to tell them to change their laws.

“I urge you to:

  • Repeal Article 40.3.3 (the Eighth Amendment) of the Irish Constitution, to enable the provision of a human rights compliant framework for abortion and information, in law and in practice.
  • Decriminalize abortion
  • Repeal the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act 2013 and replace it with laws that ensure safe and legal access to abortion, at a minimum, in cases of rape, incest, risk to health or severe and fatal foetal impairment.
  • Repeal the Regulation of Information (Services Outside the State for the Termination of Pregnancies) Act 1995 and any related censorship laws.”

Join with World Animal Protection and help end animal exports

What’s happening?

Millions of sheep and cattle suffer unnecessarily during live export because of the unbearable conditions on board ships. In shocking new evidence now coming to light in the Middle East, we have seen how our exported sheep and cattle are still suffering unbelievable abuse.

The cruel live export trade causes intense suffering to millions of animals every year. Thousands die before reaching their destination and many face slaughter in inhumane conditions that would be unacceptable in Australia.

World Animal Protection’s efforts

Together with World Animal Protection, we can let the Prime Minister know that we want an end to the cruelty of live export, and until that happens we want the current regulations strengthened, not weakened, and no new markets opened up.

Research has shown that there’s a viable and humane alternative to exporting live animals from Australia. Moving from live export to a chilled and frozen meat trade will protect millions of animals from needless suffering. Also, independent research shows that this humane alternative will protect Australian farmers, the economy and create new jobs.

World Animal Protection’s Live Export campaign has been working since 2008 to move the Australian government and industry to adopt a more humane alternative.

Join with Avaaz and help stop the drownings

What’s happening?

Recently, we saw in the news the awful image of the drowned little boy. The boy was a Syrian three year old who washed up on a Turkish beach. His five year old brother and mother also died, during their desperate attempt to flee the Syrian war.

As tragic as these events have been, they have been the catalyst that is bringing about action to help the fleeing refugees. After massive public calls to welcome refugees, German Chancellor Merkel and the President of the EU Commission are leading efforts to deliver a new, strong European Union plan that would give refuge to people fleeing war and hunger.

Avaaz’s efforts

The deaths in Turkey have led many to call on their governments to have a heart and review their policies on refugees. Many governments are bow changing their policies to allow for more refugees to be processed, including Australia who has just announced that 12,000 Syrian refugees will be allowed to resettle in Australia.

“France is on board, but shamefully the UK, Hungary, and other Eastern European countries have been blocking this emergency action. Whether EU politicians lead the world to a humane 21st century refugee plan, or turn their backs, depends on how much they feel the public demands it.”

Join with Animals Australia and stop the slaughter of kangaroos in the ACT

What’s happening?

The kangaroos that live in Canberra’s nature reserves annually become part of a violent and unnecessary slaughter. Every year, the government approves plans for a kangaroo ‘management’ cull program and slaughters hundreds of kangaroos on reserves in and around Canberra.

“Despite the lack of definitive scientific evidence that the presence of kangaroos has a negative impact on other native flora and fauna, proponents of the plan claim that the kill is necessary to keep kangaroo populations at ‘sustainable’ levels.” – Animals Australia

However, a government commissioned review found that the kangaroo management plan is based on the presumption that kangaroos have a direct effect on the amount of vegetation, and while kangaroos do change plant diversity, the details are unclear.

Even if there was credible evidence that the number of kangaroos in ACT reserves must be reduced, there are options available to use only non-lethal methods to this end (fencing, relocations, fertility control).

Animals Australia’s efforts

Animals Australia is working with the public to send a message to the ACT government that Australians don’t want kangaroos needlessly slaughtered.

“With serious questions about the evidence underpinning the Government’s justification for the kill, and with the potential for non-lethal management to be trialled, no kangaroo should suffer at the hands of shooters in the ACT.” – Animals Australia
