Support the Oxfam South Sudan Hunger Appeal

What’s happening in Sudan

The conflict that broke out in South Sudan on 15 December 2013 has left more than 10,000 dead and displaced more than one million people. More than a million people have fled their homes since fighting erupted between different factions of South Sudan’s ruling party last December. Thousands have now died in the conflict that started as a political dispute between South Sudan President Salva Kiir and Riek Machar, his sacked deputy, but escalated into ethnic violence.

Right now, hundreds of thousands of people are stranded in basic shelters and without food. Unable to return home and plant their crops, aid agencies are warning of a severe food crisis in the coming months. Months of fighting in South Sudan has prevented farmers from planting or harvesting crops, causing food shortages nationwide.

Last month, South Sudan, which gained independence from Sudan in 2011, topped the list of fragile states in this year’s index released by The Fund for Peace, a leading US-based research institute.

Oxfam’s efforts

Oxfam have scaled up their work across South Sudan in response to the crisis.

“With the arrival of the wet season, we face additional challenges including the response to a severe cholera outbreak in Juba, and a lack of infrastructure to transport supplies.” – Oxfam

You can help save the Arctic

What’s happening in the Arctic

“There are some places on this Earth that are so important and fragile they should be protected at all costs. The Arctic is one of those places.” – Greenpeace

The melting Arctic is under threat from oil drilling, industrial fishing and conflict. It may seem like a distant place, but the Arctic acts as the Earth’s heart – regulating our climate and circulating the ocean currents.

Shell, Lego and the Arctic

Lego has recently partnered with Shell that will help the oil giant clean up its image as one of the world’s most dangerous Arctic drillers. Already, more than 16 million Shell-branded LEGO sets have been sold or given away at petrol stations in 26 countries. LEGO, the biggest toy company in the world, has built its brand on its continued promise of leaving a better world for children. But by teaming up with Shell it’s letting kids down.

“Shell wants to take advantage of the melting ice to drill for more of the fuels that caused the melting in the first place. But scientists say an oil spill there would be impossible to clean up, devastating the Arctic’s unique wildlife. It’s faced fierce criticism for its plans from environmental NGOs and regulators, and reputation-wrecking media coverage.” – Greenpeace

Greenpeace takes action

Greenpeace have launched global campaign calling on LEGO to block Shell.

“In countries on six continents, our movement of more than 5 million Arctic defenders will mobilise to break this relationship. Together we’ll call on LEGO to stand up for Arctic protection, and for children, by ditching Shell for good.” – Greenpeace

You can help save our oceans

Currently, the US government is receiving public comments on whether or not to create the world’s largest Marine Protected Area in the Pacific Ocean.

Marine Protected Areas

Marine protected areas (MPAs), like any protected area, are regions in which human activity has been placed under some restrictions in the interest of protecting the natural environment, its surrounding waters and the occupant ecosystems, and any cultural or historical resources that may require preservation or management. MPAs play a crucial role in safeguarding the rich diversity of life in our oceans.

They provide a safe haven for fish, endangered species and their habitats. While MPAs are usually designed to enhance biodiversity, they can also complement fisheries management actions and enhance other economic activity such as tourism.

“The concept of protecting areas in the sea is relatively new to scientists and policy makers alike, and we are still learning how to best manage these areas to balance human use and maintain healthy ecosystems. Research from protected areas throughout the world, notably the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, has clearly demonstrated the value of protected areas to enhancing marine life as the protection that was put in place years ago is now resulting in thriving ecosystems.” – Marine Conservation Institute

A US marine reserve the size of Mexico

The US government is considering creating the world’s largest MPA in the Pacific Ocean, but President Obama is under enormous pressure from a powerful fishing lobby to water down the plan.

“Scientists say the best way to save our oceans is to protect large swaths from exploitation so that marine life can recover. Four years ago, we played a pivotal role persuading the UK government to create a massive marine sanctuary in the Indian Ocean, and the UK Foreign Ministry cited our campaign in its announcement.” – Avaaz

Join with Amnesty International and stop the US government arming Israel

What’s happening

It is the civilians who have borne the brunt of the violence in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and much of this has been carried out with foreign supplied arms. The Israeli military has used a wide variety of conventional weapons such as guns, bullets, missiles, drones, jet fighters, artillery, tanks, armoured vehicles and naval vessels to commit serious human rights abuses in Gaza.

Since the Israeli military Operation “Protective Edge” started, more than 1,260 Palestinians have died, more than 6,000 have been injured, and up to 400,000 appear to have been internally displaced as of 30 July. The United Nations has estimated that over 850 of those killed in Gaza are civilians, including 249 children and 135 women.

On the same day Israeli forces killed 20 Palestinians at a UN school, the US confirmed it had provided Israel with fresh supplies of munitions, including mortar rounds for tanks and ammo for grenade launchers.

Amnesty International’s efforts

Amnesty International is taking a stand by calling for a UN-imposed comprehensive arms embargo on Israel, Hamas and Palestinian armed groups.

“It is time for a UN-mandated international investigation into violations committed on all sides amidst Israel’s invasion of Gaza and indiscriminate rocket fire from Palestinian armed groups into Israel. The US government needs to do its part and stop giving munitions, weapons, crowd control devices, and military training to Israel.” – Amnesty International
