You can help release Chelsea Manning

Who is Chelsea Manning?

Chelsea Manning is a United States Army soldier who was convicted in July 2013 of violations of the Espionage Act and other offenses, after releasing the largest set of classified documents ever leaked to the public. Manning was sentenced in August 2013 to 35 years’ imprisonment, with the possibility of parole in the eighth year, and to be dishonourably discharged from the Army.

Some of the documents pointed to potential human rights violations and breaches of humanitarian law by US troops abroad, as well as by Afghan and Iraqi forces operating alongside the US army, and the CIA.

Chelsea says she was trying to spark a meaningful debate on the costs of war and raise awareness of US military conduct in Iraq and Afghanistan. But she wasn’t allowed as part of her defence to say that she was acting in the public interest. What’s more, further unnecessary charges were brought against her, including ‘aiding the enemy’. Such charges appeared to be an attempt to put off future whistleblowers seeking to expose government wrongdoing.

During her trial, Chelsea Manning was not allowed to present evidence that she was acting in the public interest, and was only allowed to explain her motives at the sentencing phase. She was detained for three years, and spent eleven months in conditions described by a UN torture expert as ‘cruel and inhumane’. These included being confined for 23 hours a day to a small cell with no window to the outside.

Amnesty International is collecting signatures for a petition to send to President Barack Obama, asking to commute her sentence to the time she served in pre-trial detention, and release her immediately. The petition also calls on the government to urgently investigate the potential human rights violations exposed by Chelsea Manning and to strengthen protections for those who reveal information that the public has the right to know, and stop using the Espionage Act to prosecute whistleblowers like Chelsea Manning.

You can help cut carbon

The world is about to sign up to a 100% clean energy future!

About carbon

Greenhouse gases threaten to change the climate in dangerous ways we can’t predict. A carbon footprint is historically defined as “the total sets of greenhouse gas emissions caused by an organization, event, product or person.” Greenhouse gases can be emitted through transport, land clearance, and the production and consumption of food, fuels, manufactured goods, materials, wood, roads, buildings, and services.

What can we do?

The impact of pollution on the environment is scary enough to have the government gunning to slash carbon emissions. However, the goal to completely cut carbon is at risk at the Lima climate talks. Climate Ministers from 195 countries are arriving at the global summit in Peru. Our governments are about to set a goal to cut carbon pollution completely, putting us on a path to 100% clean energy. This target is now in the draft Global Climate Agreement, but it is at risk because oil, coal and fracking companies and countries that want to keep polluting are lobbying hard to pull this crucial target from the text. Let’s show them this commitment is non-negotiable.

How can we help?

People power forced through this crucial goal, now we have to protect it! If we don’t, scientists are clear — catastrophic and runaway climate change is inevitable. Our best chance of blocking back-room deals with polluters is bombarding our Ministers with thousands of messages.

If enough of us act, they’ll know they’re being watched and expected to stand strong for the goal of 0 carbon, and 100% clean energy. The Avaaz team is on the ground and will ensure each country’s delegate and media know how many messages have been sent per country, and our messages could even be projected onto screens right in the conference hall and hand delivered to Ministers.

Help stop cuts to the emergency aid fund

It’s Christmas

Christmas is a time for giving. It’s a time to remember those less fortunate than ourselves.

In Australia, we’re lucky to be one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Yet, we give relatively little to support those less fortunate in other countries.

Aid works. Helping to halve child deaths in the past twenty years is just one example of this. Our government must not forget the power of Australia’s aid and the many thousands of people it works for, this festive season.

We understand that there could be plans to make further cuts to the already slashed aid budget in the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook, due to be released in a couple of weeks. This is unacceptable. Australia’s aid budget is already far behind that of many other countries with wealth comparative to ours.

We know that aid works. From the response to the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, to Typhoon Haiyan just last year, we have seen the transformative nature of aid in action.

We know that poverty and inequality can be overcome. Australians are generous people and we can play a role in supporting people to live the lives they want and fulfil their potential.

Sign the climate petition to save the world

Climate change red alert

Avaaz is heading up one of the most important petitions of our generation – the petition to save the world. Climate change is the greatest threat facing our world today–and we are almost out of time to stop it. Humankind has the technology to stop a climate catastrophe–but only with bold government action. Now it’s up to the world’s people to demand that their leaders listen to the scientists.

What can we do?

Avaaz is sending its global petition to national leaders around the world–along with personalized messages from citizens of every country on earth.

“Hundreds of thousands of us will take to the streets for the People’s Climate March just before the summit.” – Avaaz.org

Scientists warn us that climate change could accelerate beyond our control, threatening our survival and everything we love. One top scientist just warned that we are all in major trouble if global warming releases gigantic amounts of methane gas from the arctic tundra. The UN knows this is one of several catastrophic climate threats we’re facing, and is bringing world leaders to New York for a major summit on this global emergency.

How you can help

Avaaz will be sending our messages to national, local and international leaders.

“We call on you to keep global temperature rise under the unacceptably dangerous level of 2 degrees C, by phasing out carbon pollution to zero. To achieve this, you must urgently forge realistic global, national and local agreements, to rapidly shift our societies and economies to 100% clean energy by 2050. Do this fairly, with support to the most vulnerable among us. Our world is worth saving and now is our moment to act. But to change everything, we need everyone. Join us.”

Send your message that asks for a commitment to bold domestic efforts and a new international agreement to avert climate disaster and move the world economy away from carbon fuels.
