Join with Greenpeace for a coal-free future

What’s happening?

The Australian coal industry’s contribution to the economy is rapidly shrinking – even as its contribution towards global warming is spiralling out of control. The coal industry claims to be an indispensable part of the economy and labour market, but the truth is very different.

Although the amount of coal Australia produces continues to increase, albeit slower than expected, its economic contribution and significance to Australia’s economy is diminishing rapidly. For every tonne of coal produced Australia is receiving less income, fewer jobs, and lower royalties and taxes. The industry’s contribution to the national GDP has dropped by 55% since 2008/9.

As production of Australian coal increases, so too does the environmental harm. On current projections, the carbon emissions exported in Australian coal will soon overtake the carbon exported in Saudi Arabian oil. Even if Australia meets the 2030 domestic emissions reduction commitment it made in the Paris agreement, the carbon saved will be wiped out seven times over by increased coal exports.

Greenpeace’s efforts

Off the north-east coast of Australia, one of the world’s greatest natural wonders is at threat from the coal mining industry and in urgent need of your help. If the coal industry gets its wish, huge coal reserves in central Queensland will be opened up for mining and millions of tonnes of seafloor will be dredged in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area to construct massive coal port expansions. Hundreds more coal ships will pass through the Reef, heightening the risk of accidents and oil spills and negatively impacting coral at a time when the health of the Reef is already in decline.

Join with Avaaz to stop the Yulin dog meat festival

What’s happening?

At the Yulin dog meat festival, dogs are stolen from their owners and beaten or bled to death. Then they’re hung upside down from hooks, a slit cut from their anus and skin ripped off their bodies, and sold to be eaten.

The suffering must be unbearable — new research shows that in terms of emotion, dogs’ brains are much like ours, something dog owners and lovers understand well. When we see dogs for what they are — living beings with thoughts and feelings — the torture they endure at this ‘festival’ becomes unimaginable.

Already thousands of Chinese citizens have spoken out against the festival, but authorities won’t act until they see how badly it’s hurting China’s global image, which they’ve been working hard to improve. With Avaaz, we can show the Chinese government that the world cares about this puppy slaughter and wants them to stop it immediately.

Avaaz’s efforts

When the campaign gathers enough signatures, Avaaz will take out ads, work with influential celebrities, run the first independent national poll on dog-eating in China, and put this issue on front pages everywhere until Chinese authorities act.

Join with Amnesty International and speak out for justice

What’s happening?

Every year, the Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Award celebrates individuals and groups who speak out for justice. The recipients are people who have used their talents to inspire others to fight for human rights. The award also aims to create debate, encourage public action and raise awareness of human rights issues.

In 2016, the prestigious award will be shared between world-renowned musician Angélique Kidjo and three inspirational African youth activist groups, Y’en a marre from Senegal, Le Balai Citoyen from Burkina Faso and LUCHA from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Amnesty International’s efforts

The Award event is produced by Art for Amnesty, Amnesty International’s artist engagement programme, which brings together international artists of all disciplines in a collaborative effort to defend and celebrate human rights for all.

Grammy-winning artist Kidjo fled her homeland Benin in the 1980s after being pressured to perform for the country’s repressive regime. In a 40-year-career spawning 12 albums, she has been a prominent campaigner for freedom of expression and for the education of girls in Africa, as well as against female genital mutilation.  “I have always tried to use my singing and spoken voice to fight injustice and inequality.” – Angélique Kidjo, singer-songwriter and 2016 Ambassador of Conscience.

Y’en a marre (“Fed Up”) is a group of Senegalese rappers and journalists who joined forces in January 2011 to encourage young people to register to vote. Three of the group’s founders were arrested in February 2012 after helping to organize a peaceful sit-in protest against the government. Y’en a marre remains active, urging the new government to implement promised reforms.  “There is no such thing as a foregone conclusion, there are only abandoned responsibilities.” – Fadel Barro, Y’en a marre, 2016 Ambassador of Conscience Awardees.

Join with Avaaz to convince Russia to build the world’s biggest marine protected area

What’s happening?

There is one almost completely untouched body of water on our planet – a magical place where majestic blue whales, penguins, and mysterious squid roam free.

But this paradise — the size of Germany, France and the UK combined — could soon be lost. Hunters have already massacred thousands of endangered whales in Antarctica’s Ross Sea, now massive industrial fishing fleets want to devastate the area.

Avaaz’s efforts

if 24 countries agree, this pristine ocean can become the world’s biggest marine protected area. 23 are finally on board, 1 isn’t — yet. Russia. Amazingly, we have a huge insider chance to persuade it to join, right now. Oceans experts have a private event lined up with President Putin’s top advisors and they’ll deliver our petition directly!

Within days, governments could begin turning wide stretches of the Antarctic ocean into the world’s largest marine sanctuary, saving the habitat of whales, penguins, and thousands of other polar species from industrial fishing fleets. But they won’t act unless we speak out now.

The whales and penguins can’t speak for themselves, so it’s up to us to defend them. Let’s change negotiators’ minds with a massive wave of public pressure — Avaaz will surround the meeting with hard-hitting ads, and together we’ll deliver our message to delegates via a deafening cry on social networks. Sign and share this urgent petition.

“As citizens from countries around the world, we respectfully call on you to act now to protect Antarctica’s Ross Sea, a precious habitat for whales, penguins and other incredible species and a critical site for scientific research. Specifically we urge you to sign up to the international plan to turn the Ross Sea into the world’s largest marine protected area. Preserving the world’s most pristine waters will be a powerful act of global leadership in conservation.”

Join with Avaaz to help save African elephants from poachers

What’s happening?

Elephants are super smart — as close to humans as apes, yet we are literally killing them to extinction. At the current rate of killing, elephants may be extinct in 15 years. Dozens of heavily-armed hunters rode into a national park in Cameroon, butchered over 600 majestic elephants, then hacked off their faces for their tusks. Poachers have annihilated half of central Africa’s last elephants.

Avaaz’s efforts

Four elephants are killed an hour — it’s a race against time before we lose these gentle giants forever. elephants are being slaughtered by poachers in record numbers — and their tusks hacked off with chainsaws — to make luxury items, statues and trinkets.  The main culprit for this carnage is Thailand — the fastest growing market for unregulated ivory. Brave investigators have gone undercover in poaching rings in eight African countries, and already 1,200 traffickers have been jailed! It’s awe-inspiring stuff, and it’s won awards, but many funders are wary of going head-to-head with organised crime.

The African elephant could be extinct in the wild within a decade if we don’t do something about it. If we each give now, this team can expand to more countries, lock up more kingpins and complicit officials, and we can campaign to rescue these beautiful creatures from industrial-scale slaughter.

20,000 African elephants are killed every year, and the number of ivory products on sale in Bangkok trebled in the last twelve months. Let’s show the strength of our community by issuing an enormous call to protect the lives of one of the world’s most precious species.
