Join with Animals Australia and take action for the abused animals in Victorian slaughterhouses

What’s happening?

Sickening cruelty toward animals has again been discovered in a Victorian slaughterhouse. Animals Australia was provided with hours of footage, uncovered in a major Victorian abattoir for the second time in three years, prompting calls for mandatory CCTV cameras to be installed in all of the state’s slaughterhouses. The footage depicts daily horrors for pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and just days-old dairy calves at Riverside Meats in Echuca. In one of the worst examples of abuse, a pig in a cattle restraint box suffered four shots from a captive bolt gun, then was shot twice with a rifle, the ordeal lasting over 6 minutes.

Animals Australia’s efforts

Government regulation and audits are failing. Having been caught out in the past, Riverside Meats in Victoria already had the attention of authorities. Yet still it took secret footage supplied to Animals Australia to catch what audits and regulations failed to detect. Over 1,000 videos were sent to authorities cataloging abuses to cows, calves, goats and sheep.

The inescapable reality is that whenever animals are killed en masse, there will be fear and suffering. Mandatory and independently monitored CCTV may help curb extreme abuse. But it’s the demand for meat and dairy that’s fuelling this relentless pressure to kill and butcher animals quickly. Workers become frustrated, corners are cut and cruelty inevitably ensues.

Join with Avaaz to help Aleppo’s white helmet heroes

What’s happening?

The UN has just announced that Aleppo is fast becoming ‘one giant graveyard’ and residents are at risk of ‘extermination’. Not one of our governments is in there saving lives, except for an extraordinary group of Syrians known as The White Helmets.

Syria’s White Helmets have saved 73,530 lives so far, rushing to the scene of bombings to pull people from the rubble and carry them to safety. They have little help over there and are often targeted; Russian and Syrian regime planes bomb civilians, then circle back to bomb the rescue workers who scramble to help.

As the conflict continues to spiral, the White Helmets are doing work that no one else can, or will. They’re standing up as heroes while the world watches and fails to stop the conflict. These heroes are just ordinary people who felt they couldn’t stand by, and so they threw themselves right into the line of fire.

Avaaz’s efforts

The White Helmets were nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize – and were hoping to spend the $1 million prize money to further their efforts in Syria, but unfortunately they lost. Avaaz and their team of supporters around the world are now working on efforts to get them the help they need.

“Together we have the power to give the White Helmets the recognition they deserve and the funding they desperately need.” – Avaaz

“The White Helmets aren’t from an international aid organization, and they need every dollar they can get. They’re succeeding where the rest of the world is failing — in giving hope to millions of Syrians. Our community can join them, and keep up the fight for a safe, peaceful future in Syria.”

Join with Greenpeace and say no to new coal mines

What’s happening?

The Great Barrier Reef is at risk of destruction through coal mining. The Reef is a living thing – precious and fragile. It is the only living thing on earth that is visible from space – and it needs protecting now more than ever.

The coal industry is accelerating global warming by mining and burning coal, and is putting the future of the Reef at risk. In 2016, warming oceans caused the worst coral bleaching event in history on the Great Barrier Reef and almost a quarter of the Reef’s coral died.

Greenpeace’s efforts

Graeme Kelleher is an activist working to protect the Reef. For 16 years, beginning in 1979, he was in charge of the Government authority trusted with designing and protecting the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Back then, the diversity of the Reef was amazing. Now, he finds that global warming and our Government’s decisions are putting the health and future of the Reef at risk.

Graeme is calling on the government to protect the Great Barrier Reef from the devastating impacts of climate change by implementing a ban on new coal mines in Australia.  It takes each and every one of us to do our bit if we want to make change for the better and that’s why Graeme is using his experience on this issue to speak out about the Great Barrier Reef.

“To me, it’s clear: Australia cannot have a healthy Great Barrier Reef and an expanding coal industry. Burning fossil fuels is changing our climate and warming our oceans, which in turn is bleaching and killing coral in record numbers.” – Graeme Kelleher

Join with Amnesty International to protect Malawi children with Albinism from murder

What’s happening?

There is an ongoing human rights crisis taking place in Malawi. People, and particularly children, living with albinism in Malawi are at a great risk of abduction and murder. Attacks on people with albinism have seen a sharp rise since November 2014. In 2015 alone, there were 45 reports of actual or attempted murder and abduction.

“Annie Alfred is like any other child in Malawi … But she may never live to realize her ambitions because of people who believe her body has magic powers. These people think she’s unhuman. They call her names like “ghost” or “money”. They want to steal her hair or – worse – her bones.” – Amnesty International

Albinism is an inherited skin condition, and about about 7,000–10,000 people in Malawi share Annie’s condition. They are all at risk of being hunted and killed by people who think their body parts will make them rich, as they believe albino bodies have magical powers.

Amnesty International’s efforts

Malawian President Peter Mutharika issued a statement last year, condemning the wave of attacks on people with albinism. He has called on police to arrest perpetrators and protect those with albinism and those at risk from attacks, but recently governmental response to the growing problem has been lacklustre.

Amnesty International is campaigning worldwide to put a stop to these murders. With our combined efforts, we can take action and call on Malawi’s government to step and stop the brutality.

“I urge you to protect people with albinism from murder. Attacks on them have risen steeply in Malawi since November 2014.

Annie Alfred is one of many people with albinism in the country. Along with others like her, she is under threat from those who believe that killing her for her body parts will make them rich. Prove them wrong.

Please show them that far from riches, crimes against people like Annie are met with the full weight of the law.”

Join with Avaaz to ask world leaders to protect our planet

What’s happening?

Scientists are saying that we are in the midst of the next great extinction and humanity is taking a chainsaw to the tree of life. Life is being extinguished as fast as when the dinosaurs disappeared. By 2020, two-thirds of wild animals will be gone. Unless we stop this tragedy, the Earth’s delicate biodiversity could completely collapse, leaving our planet deathly silent and uninhabitable for humans.

Avaaz’s efforts

Avaaz are putting together an effort to put half of our planet under protection that has the backing of top scientists. This ambitious new plan would heal our home, and governments are about to meet to discuss the crisis.

Avaaz empowers millions of people from all walks of life to take action on pressing global, regional and national issues, from corruption and poverty to conflict and climate change. The Avaaz community campaigns in 15 languages, served by a core team on 6 continents and thousands of volunteers. They take action — signing petitions, funding media campaigns and direct actions, emailing, calling and lobbying governments, and organising “offline” protests and events — to ensure that the views and values of the world’s people inform the decisions that affect us all. Underlying Avaaz campaigns is a set of values—the conviction that we are all human beings first, and privileged with responsibilities to each other, to future generations, and to the planet.

Join with Avaaz and let your voice be heard to save our planet. If we bring a resounding chorus of human voices behind the 50% plan, we can push governments to stop the next mass extinction.

Send your message today;

“We global citizens are deeply concerned by scientists warning that ecosystems critical to sustaining life on Earth could collapse in our lifetimes. We call on you to meet existing targets to protect biodiversity, forge a new agreement so that at least 50% of our lands and oceans are protected and restored, and ensure our planet is completely sustainably managed. This must take into consideration the needs of human development and have the active support of indigenous peoples. This long-term goal for nature can restore harmony with our home.”
