Join with Amnesty International to stop the abuse of asylum seekers in Nauru and on Manus Island

What’s happening?

Children and adults seeking asylum who journey to Australia by boat have been forcibly transferred, by the Australian Government, to the remote country of Nauru or Manus Island in Papua New Guinea. The Australian Government has set up a system that deliberately inflicts cruelty and abuse on thousands of people who are simply looking for a safe place to rebuild their lives.

Amnesty International’s efforts

Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 7 million people who take injustice personally. They are campaigning for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. They are funded by members and people around the world. They are independent of any political ideology, economic interest or religion; No government is beyond scrutiny, no situation is beyond hope.

This July, Amnesty International investigated conditions in Nauru, and in November 2013 our team of investigators visited Manus Island. Their investigations found that the Australian Government is going to great lengths to deliberately inflict suffering on refugees and people seeking asylum, and to hide this abuse from the eyes of the world. Australia’s leaders are completely failing people seeking freedom and a new life in their country. So now it’s up to us to make sure they close down the abusive refugee centres on Nauru and Manus Island.

How you can help

Join with Amnesty International in their call to the Australian Immigration Minister Peter Dutton to demand an end to the secretive abuse of two thousand people held in Nauru and Manus Island.

Some European countries are looking to adopt Australia’s appalling tactics. We cannot let this become the future of refugee protection.

Send your message now;

“I call on the Australian Government to:

  • Close the Regional Processing Centres on Nauru and Papua New Guinea.
  • Bring all asylum seekers and refugees on Nauru and Manus Island to Australia immediately.
  • Assess, in a fair and timely manner, those whose international protection applications have not been finalised by the authorities in Nauru and Papua New Guinea.
  • Ensure that all those who were granted refugee status on Nauru and Manus have the right to settle in Australia. “

Join with Avaaz to save the last tigers

What’s happening?

Banks are dishing out millions to build a coal plant right next door to the mega forest that’s home to some of the last Bengal Tigers. The proposed 1,320MW Rampal coal-fired power plant is located next to the Sundarbans in Bangladesh — the world’s largest mangrove forest and a World Heritage site that is home to endangered Royal Bengal Tigers, dolphins, turtles and many other critical species.

All independent evaluations of the project conclude that it is environmentally damaging, violates human rights and is economically irresponsible. UNESCO has also released a report following a fact-finding mission which recommends cancelling the Rampal plant saying it will seriously harm the Sundarbans World Heritage site. After the UN report slammed the project in Bangladesh, Avaaz went straight to the international banks. Now they’re scrambling to figure out what to. If we turn up the pressure on JPMorgan, Crédit Agricole and others, we can make this so toxic that they’ll quit the project for good.

Avaaz’s efforts

Avaaz empowers millions of people from all walks of life to take action on pressing global, regional and national issues, from corruption and poverty to conflict and climate change. The Avaaz community campaigns in 15 languages, served by a core team on 6 continents and thousands of volunteers. We take action — signing petitions, funding media campaigns and direct actions, emailing, calling and lobbying governments, and organizing “offline” protests and events — to ensure that the views and values of the world’s people inform the decisions that affect us all. Underlying Avaaz campaigns is a set of values—the conviction that we are all human beings first, and privileged with responsibilities to each other, to future generations, and to the planet.

The biodiversity of our planet is precious — and as the world’s largest mangrove forest, the Sundarbans is a unique ecosystem whose worth cannot be measured in monetary terms. It is all of our responsibility to ensure that it is protected — which is exactly why it is termed a World Heritage site. Let’s build a million-strong cry to save the tigers and convince their CEOs to pull out. Sign now to save the last tigers.

Join with Animals Australia to help get the ban on greyhound racing reinstated

What’s happening?

Just weeks ago, we were celebrating a monumental leap forward for animals. Greyhound racing — along with ‘live baiting’, drugging, fatal injuries, and mass graves — was set to become a thing of the past in NSW. But since then, NEWS Corp waged a relentless attack on the Premier and has successfully overturned the historic greyhound racing ban. It seems that again, the interests of animals — to be free from pain, fear and abuse — have come second to the interests of the almighty dollar.

Animals Australia’s efforts

Now, once again the animals need us. It was the support of caring people around the world that fuelled the investigations by Animals Australia and Animal Liberation Queensland.

Terrified piglets, rabbits and native possums are all victims of live baiting — tied to lures, flung around racetracks at breakneck speeds, and then mauled to death. Some animals who survived their first attack were ‘re-used’ multiple times. Greyhounds themselves — naturally gentle dogs — are often kept in deplorable living conditions off-track. Industry-wide, some 18,000 greyhounds are killed every year because they aren’t deemed fast enough to win races.

Evidence gathered by Animals Australia investigators exposed the shocking widespread practice of live baiting in NSW and VIC for the first time — leading to police raids, animal seizures, suspensions, prosecutions, jail time for perpetrators, industry reform and government inquiries. Countless small animals have since been spared from the horror of being used as ‘live bait’.

The threat of animal cruelty investigators in the field is currently the highest motivator for these trainers to not routinely abuse animals. Animals Australia’s ability to continue these investigations provides animals with the only hope this cruelty will ever end.

The greyhound industry didn’t deserve a second chance. Going back into battle against this industry again isn’t something we’ve planned for. But it is exactly what we need to do. Your support can keep caring eyes watching over animals and help prevent and end cruelty in all industries where animals are at risk.

Join with Oxfam to combat the crisis in Africa

What’s happening?

There is a desperate crisis growing in Africa, yet not much is known about the terrible experiences faced by the people affected. Violence in northeast Nigeria, as well as in neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, has forced 2.7 million people to flee their homes, and left over nine million people in need of emergency support. Unable to grow or buy food, millions are going hungry and thousands of people are estimated to have already died.

Michika, in northeast Nigeria’s Adamawa state, is an area that has been badly hit by the conflict with Boko Haram. In the towns, key services like banks, schools, water and electricity have been destroyed.

“The attack on Michika was an awful event, which I hope never to experience again. It took me the whole day to climb Himmakai Mountain with my seven children during the armed attacks. It usually only takes four hours to climb this mountain, but it took much longer because I had all my children with me. Some of them were still very little.” – Michika resident.

Oxfam’s efforts

Oxfam has been working hard in Michika to make sure people have clean drinking water, as well as providing food and hygiene items to people forced to flee, the communities sheltering them and those returning to their homes. Michika is just one of the areas hit hard by the ongoing violence in Nigeria and surrounding countries. If Oxfam is to help more children and families, aid agencies need more equipment, more staff and more resources to help more people, faster.

Join with Avaaz to call on our Government to cut airline pollution

What’s happening?

Governments are holding a landmark meeting very soon to agree to a deal to cut airline pollution starting 2020. If the airline industry were a country, its pollution would be bigger than that of the UK!! So far it has been flying under the radar, but now we have a chance to make sure it doesn’t fry our planet.

Unfortunately, major flight hubs like Australia and Russia are outrageously saying they won’t join — even though they just committed to the Paris climate agreement to end carbon pollution.

Avaaz’s efforts

This year is on course to be the hottest on record — our climate is spinning out of control but some governments are still spinning their wheels. Avaaz are working on a petition to send to our leaders to help them to make the right decision. Add your voice now to phase out airline pollution — once we reach a million, Avaaz will be able to send through the petition and hopefully make a real difference. Let’s call out this madness and ensure champions like the EU can hold other major polluters accountable.

How you can help

Join with Avaaz and send your message today to the global leaders at the ICAO meeting.

“As concerned global citizens, we urge you to keep your past promises to cap emissions growth from the global airline industry by 2020, and agree a roadmap for emissions reductions in line with the Paris Agreement goal to reach net zero emissions by mid-century. Do this fairly, supporting poorer countries and respecting local and indigenous communities’ rights to land and livelihoods. Climate change is already breaking records around the world, and fast growing airline emissions could trigger tipping points in our climate system that threaten everything we love — so act responsibly with the urgency this deserves.”
