Join with Animals Australia to help end Bali’s dog meat trade

What’s happening?

Every day, dogs are captured off the streets of Bali to supply a booming dog meat trade. A shocking Animals Australia investigation has documented Bali’s elusive dog meat trade, fuelled in part by international tourists. The dogs are dumped in bamboo crates or plastic rice sacks, awaiting the nightly slaughter with legs tied and mouths taped shut. They may languish like this for hours or days without food or water. One by one they will be brutally slaughtered in full view of their companions. Tourists are duped into thinking they aren’t eating dog meat – Animals Australia’s investigations found that a dog meat vendor didn’t hesitate to lie to Aussie tourists to make money from them. If you choose to eat meat in Bali, you may end up eating dog meat.

Animals Australia’s efforts

Animals Australia’s investigations found that just a few blocks away from the bustling tourist strips, there was a dark side to this ‘Island Paradise’ — dogs were being poisoned, beaten and strangled for their meat. This violent trade in dog meat is allowed by Bali’s government despite horrific animal cruelty and the serious health risks posed to local people and unsuspecting tourists.

Animals Australia have taken their investigations to the highest levels of government in Bali and every possible influencer in between — from community leaders to religious leaders to health professionals and businesses. All agree that Bali’s dog meat trade is breaching both animal cruelty and food safety laws. They have offered their assistance to the Bali government to close the dog meat trade and to partner with them to protect all animals on the island from extreme cruelty.

Now, international pressure is urgently needed to support our efforts to bring about positive change for all animals in need in Bali.

Join with Greenpeace to stop oil drilling in a whale nursery

What’s happening?

The Great Australian Bight supports thriving marine ecoystems and is home to countless unique species – most are found nowhere else in the world. Sharing the Bight’s waters are endangered southern right whales. Almost hunted to extinction in the 19th century, their population is still recovering. On top of imminent threats to their hearing from Seismic blasting, an oil spill in the Bight could devastate their survival. Oil and whales simply don’t mix.

Greenpeace’s efforts

Greenpeace is an independent campaigning organisation that uses non-violent direct action to expose global environmental problems and to force solutions which are essential to a green and peaceful future. Their goal is to ensure the ability of the earth to nurture life in all its diversity. Their core values are;

Independence: they do not accept money from governments, corporations or political parties.

Bearing witness: their peaceful protests work to raise awareness and bring public opinion to bear on decision-makers.

Non-violent direct action: they strongly believe that violence in any form is morally wrong and accomplishes nothing.

Desperate oil companies are looking to ever more extreme and dangerous locations to drill, in a reckless bid to exploit oil that we can’t afford to burn. From the pristine Arctic to the majestic Great Australian Bight, people have begun to break the stranglehold of Big Oil. But we still need your help to kick them out for good. Together, we can stand up to greedy oil companies like Statoil and Chevron.

Join with Amnesty International to stop human rights violations against Palestinians

What’s happening?

There have been systematic human rights violations against Palestinians for over half a century. These have been happening during Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, in East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip. Since the occupation first began in June 1967, Israel’s ruthless policies of land confiscation, illegal settlement and dispossession, coupled with rampant discrimination, have inflicted immense suffering on Palestinians, depriving them of their basic rights.

“The worst thing is the sense of being a stranger in your own land and feeling that not a single part of it is yours.” – Raja Shehadeh, Palestinian lawyer and writer

Israel’s military rule disrupts every aspect of daily life in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. It continues to affect whether, when and how Palestinians can travel to work or school, go abroad, visit their relatives, earn a living, attend a protest, access their farmland, or even access electricity or a clean water supply. It means daily humiliation, fear and oppression. People’s entire lives are effectively held hostage by Israel. Israel has also adopted a complex web of military laws to crush dissent against its policies, and senior government officials have branded Israelis advocating for Palestinian rights as “traitors”.

Amnesty International’s efforts

Amnesty International are calling on governments to stop enabling the economy that keeps these illegal settlements growing and fuels the suffering of Palestinians. Governments around the world are letting goods produced in these settlements into their markets, and are allowing companies in their countries to operate in settlements. All of this helps the illegal settlements profit and thrive.

Join with Oxfam to break the cycle of poverty in Zimbabwe

What’s happening?

Zimbabwe is facing an urgent hunger crisis after five years of punishing drought, followed by devastating floods. Persistent drought and damaging rains have made farming almost impossible and now 4.1 million people are directly affected by severe food shortages, with most families eating only one meal every two days. Without food and water, children don’t have the strength to attend school and thrive, and this is how the cycle of poverty continues.

Oxfam’s efforts

“There was a time where it really became so bad, we were going without meals and people had no interest in us. They would just dismiss us and say ‘we don’t know how they are going to survive.”

– Liliosa, Zimbabwe

Oxfam has brought clean water to keep kids in school. Before Oxfam rehabilitated the local borehole, teacher Imanuel Tabe struggled to keep students in class. Without access to safe water, children either stayed home or skipped lessons to drink dirty water from the nearest river.

“The time we are wasting walking up and down to fetch water is productive time … If we could get water near to our place, it would reduce the amount of trips we make … and assist us to do something that would uplift our livelihoods.”- Ida, Zimbabwe

Now the kids are able to access clean and safe water, and attendance at school has improved.
