Join with Amnesty International to stop the killing of South Kordofan people

What’s happening?

People in South Kordofan are experiencing widespread human rights abuses and systematic violations including the rights to life, healthcare, education, food, safe water and adequate housing. Government forces in Sudan have committed war crimes in South Kordofan by attacking people, using indiscriminate weapons and denying people humanitarian assistance. With bombs landing in schools and hospitals the people of South Kordofan cannot get education for their children or access to adequate health care. Having been reduced to living in caves and rock crevices or hiding in foxholes to shield themselves from aerial bombardments, they also face a serious food crisis. Meanwhile, the Sudan government has cut the region off from urgently needed humanitarian assistance. All these amount to war crimes.

Amnesty International’s efforts

The people of South Kordofan wonder if the world has forgotten them and whether they matter. Amnesty International stands with them and is calling on the parties to the conflict namely the Sudan government and the SPLM-N, and urging other governments working through both the African Union and the United Nations to take immediate steps to end the attacks directed at the South Kordofan people and other serious violations of human rights, including targeted and indiscriminate attacks. The Sudan government should also allow humanitarian relief to reach the people freely. They are calling on the Government of Sudan to stop targeting civilians in the ongoing conflict.

Join with Avaaz to call for an arms embargo

What’s happening?

Avaaz and all their supporters have been working hard to stop arms sales to Saudi Arabia. Recently, 740,000 of us signed the petition and targeted MEPs with phone calls and personal messages, and they listened! The European Parliament just voted for an embargo on arms sales to Saudi Arabia. This is an unprecedented statement by European politicians and makes clear weapons should not be sold to Saudi Arabia while the UN claims it may be committing war crimes. Now we need to make sure European states take heed, by continuing to campaign until this deadly trade is ended.

Avaaz’s efforts

They bomb schools, hospitals, even wedding parties. What Saudi Arabia is doing in Yemen is disgusting — and they’re doing it with weapons they buy from Europe, the US, and Canada. Now more than ever, these leaders need to see that people from every corner of the Earth are looking to them to stand up and say “NO” to Saudi Arabia and their atrocities.

Sign the urgent petition calling for an arms embargo — let’s show the EU champions overwhelming public support.

“To members of the EU Parliament, and leaders of the UK, US, Canada, Germany, France, and all other countries that have arms deals with Saudi Arabia: As concerned citizens from across the globe, we strongly urge you to suspend all arms deals with Saudi Arabia until they end their assaults in Yemen and begin a genuine peace process. With 119 violations of international humanitarian law documented in a recent UN report, it’s unacceptable to look the other way when Saudi Arabia could be using weapons from our countries to indiscriminately bomb civilians.”

Join with Greenpeace to help them place advertising to get plastic bags banned

What’s happening?

In Australia, we use 4 billion plastic bags every year, or a staggering 10 million every single day. Plastic bags are an unnecessary environmental hazard since many eco-friendly options exist like paper or canvas shopping bags. These disposable, toxic bags are an environmental hazard and a consumer of oil. We are collectively using about 12 million barrels of oil to produce the plastic bags that are used each year. Millions of these end up strewn across our beaches, or floating through waterways and oceans where fish, turtles and birds mistake them for food. And it doesn’t have to be this way.

Once these bags end up in the oceans, they join other types of plastic trash from around the world and are often swept up in currents to make its way to enormous whirling eddies of trash. The largest, near Hawaii, is more than a thousand miles across and contains more plastic than plankton. Plastic bags and other bits of floating debris are mistaken for food by seabirds, turtles, and other marine life. Up to 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles die each year as a result of plastic debris.

Greenpeace’s efforts

Greenpeace has just won an historic, world-class recycling program in NSW. And in the last few weeks, tens of thousands of supporters have signed the new petition asking state environment ministers to ban the bag. Momentum is on our side, so Greenpeace are stepping it up, grabbing politicians’ attention with a TV ad they won’t be able to dismiss or forget.

Join with World Animal Protection to give a better life to dogs

What’s happening?

Despite the strong relationship many of us have with dogs, an estimated 18 are inhumanely culled every minute, primarily due to misguided attempts to eliminate rabies. Dogs should be our best friends and protectors, but nearly 10 million are inhumanely killed each year. Dogs roam the streets in many parts of the world, and can cause concern for both local residents and tourists. Issues such as disease play a significant part in this – up to 99% of human rabies cases are transmitted by dogs, which kills more that 59,000 people per year. In the build-up to major events, large numbers of stray dogs are often killed before visitors arrive. Fear, and misguided attempts to eradicate the disease result in dogs being dragged through the streets, electrocuted, poisoned or gassed. Culling is nearly always a horrendous and painful death.

The inhumane culling of dogs is both cruel and ineffective. Only mass dog vaccination can eliminate rabies. And only proven methods of humane dog population management can stop dogs coming into conflict with the communities where they live. Vaccinating 70% of dogs in an area can eliminate rabies, and 100% of human rabies cases are preventable.

World Animal Protection’s efforts

World Animal Protection have already given out 1 million vaccinations across Africa and Asia, but they need our help to protect even more dogs around the world. They want to build better lives for 50 million dogs by 2020, as well as giving out another 1 million vaccinations.
