Join with Amnesty International to ask Greece to investigate homophobic and racist attacks

What’s happening

In August 2014, Costas and his partner were badly beaten up by thugs in a violent homophobic and racist attack in central Athens. They had met a couple of months previously at Athens Pride, and had decided to move in together. One day in late August, they went to buy some things from the shop, and spent some time outside instead of going straight back home.

“It was just us, the corner shop that was slowly closing, and a group of young men on the other edge of the square. We didn’t pay much attention to them. We sat there and talked, we had a laugh. We couldn’t imagine what would follow. Two of them approached us from behind on a motorbike and threw a bucket full of dirty water on us. I was paralysed. I sat back trying to calm down before we headed home. Big mistake. One by one, they ran towards us, and started punching and kicking us. There were around twelve or fifteen of them. Too many. They kept hitting us.” – Costas

Amnesty International’s efforts

Unfortunately, even thought the police arrived, no one was arrested and as yet no one has been brought to justice for this crime. Between 2014 and 2015, the number of reported attacks against gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or intersex (LGBTI) people in Greece has more than doubled, while racist attacks remain an ongoing issue. Greek authorities repeatedly fail to properly investigate any hate motive behind attacks, and to protect everyone affected. The lack of legal recognition of same-sex relationships and gender identity makes the LGBTI community feel even more vulnerable.

Stand as one with Paris

What’s happening?

A series of coordinated terrorist attacks ripped through Paris on Friday November 13. The shootings and explosions targeted multiple locations, killing at least 129 people and injuring more than 300. At least eight attackers were involved, operating in three separate groups. Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying they were in response to insults of Islam’s prophet and air strikes in IS territory.

On the Thursday, suicide bombers from the Islamic State set off explosives in Beirut, Lebanon killing 45 people. The suicide bombings hit a community centre and a nearby bakery in a crowded commercial and residential area in Beirut’s southern suburbs. The area is a seen as a stronghold of the militant Hezbollah group.

There are too many of us who know what it means to have terrorism touch our lives, our loved ones, our sense of connection with the people around us. Today, France and Lebanon are in the midst of that fog of tragedy.

Avaaz’s efforts

“It is at this time of darkness that our community’s weave of love can be most powerful. Let’s join hands today to embrace our brothers and sisters in France, Lebanon and across the world that are mourning, and show that our movement stands tall against this hate and commits to continue raising our voice for everything we love.” – Avaaz

These attacks were designed to shake the very foundations of all our societies. They are an assault on our shared humanity, and our tolerance, liberty and respect — the values that underpin the world our movement was built to create. Let’s be a community that projects a beacon of light and proves that fear and division won’t win out. Post a message of solidarity and love. Avaaz staff in Paris and Beirut will transcribe them and deliver them to public locations across both cities to say ‘Nous Sommes Unis’ — ‘We are One’.

Join with Animals Australia to help end the duck slaughtering season

What’s happening?

The beautiful wetlands of Victoria, South Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania should be safe havens for wildlife — instead in Autumn and early Winter they become a killing field as the duck shooting season begins.

Sadly, those birds who are killed instantly are often the ‘lucky’ ones. Ducks who are shot but left behind by shooters (estimated to be one out of every four birds shot) can suffer a prolonged and painful death from their injuries. All for the sake of a ‘sport’ that most in the community oppose.

Duck shooting maims and kills countless birds each year in Australia. An estimated one in four birds shot escape wounded, only to suffer from shattered bills, broken bones and severe internal injuries.

Animals Australia’s efforts

Duck shooting has already been banned in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia due to the extreme cruelty to birds. In 2007 and 2008, waterbird numbers were dangerously low and conditions were dry, so the duck shooting seasons were cancelled in Victoria and South Australia. Now, a survey in Victoria has found waterbird numbers are even lower, but state governments have still permitted a 2015 season — flying in the face of all credible scientific evidence:

  • Waterbird breeding levels are the lowest on record.
  • ‘Game’ bird numbers are nearly half the long-term average.
  • Wetlands are at drought-like lows.

Animals Australia are working to ban the duck slaughtering season entirely. You can help end duck shooting across the rest of Australia by sending an instant message to your state MP urging them to ban duck shooting.

Help save lives with clean water

What’s happening?

Almost 900 million people in the world do not have access to clean water – that’s a staggering one in eight people. Running taps, working toilets, clean, safe drinking water and soap — in Australia, they’re things people can take for granted. Yet around the world, millions of poor people get sick or die each day because they must go without these necessities of life. Unclean water, poor sanitation and unsafe hygiene practices have claimed more lives over the past century than any other cause – and this is continuing in many developing countries – making this one of the world’s most urgent health issues.

Oxfam’s efforts

Oxfam is providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene education in some of the world’s poorest countries. Clean water, toilets and proper hygiene aren’t luxuries. They’re basic human rights.

And for many mothers in places like Niger, they mean the most important thing of all — the chance to keep their babies alive and healthy.

“Mariama didn’t have that chance for her baby Fatima, who died from malnutrition. Without clean water, it was impossible for her to receive proper medical treatment. Thanks to people like you, we’re changing that. But there are still millions of children like Fatima who urgently need your help.”

Join with Avaaz and help save the Sierra del Divisor Amazon forest

What’s happening?

The Sierra del Divisor is on the westernmost point of Brazil, in the state of Acre, near the Peruvian border. The Sierra del Divisor Mountain Range stretches more than 600 miles along the Peru-Brazil Border in the heart of the Amazon Basin. This largely unknown and unexplored range is one of the Amazon’s last true wildernesses. The region, which is home to a biological community rich in rare and threatened species, is located in the center of a ten-million-acre multinational wildlife corridor and is one of the highest conservation priorities in Peru.

The Sierra del Divisor is at risk of being destroyed by illegal coca growers and illegal loggers. It also faces imminent threats from oil and mining development, road and pipeline construction and over-fishing. Unchecked, these threats could destroy the area in a matter of years. But with a stroke of his pen, the Peruvian Prime Minister could turn it into a National Park and save it.

Avaaz’s efforts

There is a bill to protect the forest that is on the PM’s desk right now, and PM Cateriano is considering signing it right now — but every hour he doesn’t, this treasure is being destroyed. If he takes a stand against this illegal destruction, his leadership could inspire others to protect the planet and his example will echo down generations. But it’s up to us and Avaaz to make sure he knows that.

Activists in Peru say if Cateriano knows the whole world is supporting him, it will tip him to take action. Environmentalists and indigenous groups have been lobbying for twenty years to get this area protected. Now you too can help by signing the petition:
