Join with Oxfam to make tax fair

What’s happening?

Every year, billions of dollars are squirreled away in tax havens and offshore accounts, away from the governments and public who should rightly receive a portion of that money through taxes. Globally, tax dodging multinationals are stealing $172 billion from developing countries every year. Australian-based multinationals are responsible for $2.3 billion of this staggering figure. Just like in Australia, governments in developing countries need tax revenue to pay for essential public services like healthcare, education and clean water for everyone. But when multinationals don’t pay their fair share of tax, they make it much harder for developing countries to build stronger and healthier communities.

Oxfam’s efforts

Oxfam are a global movement of people working hard to fight poverty and injustice. One person in three in the world lives in poverty. Oxfam is determined to change that world by mobilising the power of people against poverty. Oxfam’s ultimate vision is a just world without poverty. A world in which people can influence decisions that affect their lives, enjoy their rights and assume their responsibilities. A world in which everyone is treated equally. They work with partners and communities to find practical, innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive. Oxfam sees a future in which no one lives in poverty. Join their movement for change and help people help themselves in the fight against poverty.

How you can help

When multinationals contribute their fair share of tax, people living in poverty have a better chance to build a better future – for themselves and their families. The Australian Government has the power to make multinationals pay tax and help prevent extreme inequality from spiralling out of control. The Labor Party has committed to make large multinationals’ tax affairs public for every country they operate in. The announcement requiring public reporting on all Australian-based companies with a turnover above $1 billion would make Australia a world leader in tackling the tax dodging by multinationals.

Join us in calling on the Government to follow Labor’s lead and commit to making tax transparent at home and abroad.

Join with Amnesty International to call on Canada to honour the rights of Indigenous Peoples

What’s happening?

In Canada, there are more than 600 First Nations and Inuit communities that don’t have any shelters or emergency housing for women. What’s more, 58 out of 60 Indigenous languages in Canada are considered endangered. Canada is breaking its promises to honour the rights of Indigenous People and losing the opportunity to set a positive example for the international community.

The Canadian government urgently needs to uphold the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, as it promised. The Declaration is key for resolving the massive inequalities and injustices that Indigenous People face around the world. It was adopted by the UN 10 years ago, and sets out minimum standards for the “survival, dignity and well-being” of some of the world’s most marginalized and impoverished peoples.

Amnesty International’s efforts

Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 7 million people who take injustice personally. They are campaigning for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. They investigate and expose the facts, whenever and wherever abuses happen. They lobby governments, and other powerful groups such as companies. Making sure they keep their promises and respect international law.

By telling the powerful stories of the people they work with, they mobilize millions of supporters around the world to campaign for change and to stand in defence of activists on the frontline. They support people to claim their rights through education and training.

If the Canadian government keeps its promise, it will make a dramatic difference for Indigenous peoples in Canada – First Nations, Inuit and Métis – who face daily hardships and the erosion of their culture and traditions, because the government makes decisions that ignore or deny their rights.

Join with Amnesty International to call on the Minister of Justice to fulfil Canada’s promise to uphold the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Join with Avaaz to stop the torture farmer

What’s happening?

Dutch farmer Adriaan Straathof has a gruesome reputation and Germany has already banned his farming because of the poor conditions he was keeping the animals in and he had also been fined several times in the Netherlands. 20,000 pigs were killed by a blaze on his factory farm in Holland. According to animal welfare lobby group Wakker Dier, that is the largest number of pigs to perish in a single fire. The fire broke out in the four two-storey barns where the pigs were kept and firemen were unable to save any of the animals.

The farmer hopes to just carry on, but if we make this huge, we can force a whole new level of scrutiny, and get regulators to suspend his permits while all his farms are urgently investigated.

Avaaz’s efforts

Avaaz empowers millions of people from all walks of life to take action on pressing global, regional and national issues, from corruption and poverty to conflict and climate change. The Avaaz community campaigns in 15 languages, served by a core team on 6 continents and thousands of volunteers. They take action — signing petitions, funding media campaigns and direct actions, emailing, calling and lobbying governments, and organizing “offline” protests and events — to ensure that the views and values of the world’s people inform the decisions that affect us all.

“As citizens outraged by the incredible suffering of animals on farms owned by Adriaan Straathof, we urge you to take advantage of all possibilities offered by local, regional, national, and European laws to withdraw his farming permits, ensuring he is unable to farm or keep any livestock or other animals. We also urge you to pass stricter fire and animal welfare regulation to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

Join with Oxfam to help women in Ghana escape from poverty

What’s happening?

Gender inequality in Ghana traps women in poverty. It’s an age-old story. But with your support, it’s a story that we can change. Oxfam are working with women in Ghana to help them make a living and break down the barriers that keep them in poverty. By donating today, you can give women and girls in Ghana a fair chance to build a brighter future.

In rural Ghana where Beatrice lives, incomes depend on agriculture. But because farming is viewed as men’s work, she and millions of other women are excluded from income-generating activities like raising livestock and growing crops. Instead, Beatrice makes money by gathering and breaking rocks to sell as gravel. It’s backbreaking work. And it’s never enough. “Because I have no regular work, I can’t afford food,” she says.
