The Arctic needs our help!

What’s happening in the Arctic

“There are some places on this Earth that are so important and fragile they should be protected at all costs. The Arctic is one of those places.” – Greenpeace

The melting Arctic is under threat from oil drilling, industrial fishing and conflict. It may seem like a distant place, but the Arctic acts as the Earth’s heart – regulating our climate and circulating the ocean currents.

The future of the Arctic is at stake

In 2012, the Arctic sea ice has fallen to the lowest level on record. In just 30 years, more than 75% of sea ice has disappeared. In the last 30 years, we’ve lost as much as three-quarters of the floating sea ice cover at the top of the world. To save the Arctic, we must act today, and Greenpeace heads the campaign for this cause.

Greenpeace campaign

Without a government to protect it, the Arctic is vulnerable to exploitation. Greenpeace has a plan for people around the world to become guardians of the Arctic.

“For over 800,000 years, ice has been a permanent feature of the Arctic ocean. It’s melting because of our use of dirty fossil fuel energy, and in the near future it could be ice free for the first time since humans walked the Earth. This would be not only devastating for the people, polar bears, narwhals, walruses and other species that live there – but for the rest of us too.

The ice at the top of the world reflects much of the sun’s heat back into space and keeps our whole planet cool, stabilising the weather systems that we depend on to grow our food. Protecting the ice means protecting us all.” – www.savethearctic.org

You can help save the Orangutans – sign the petition now!

The threat to the orangutans

Orangutans are highly intelligent with an ability to reason and think. This large, gentle red ape is one of our closest relatives, sharing 98% of our DNA. With less than 7,000 Sumatran Orangutans and 50,000 Bornean Orangutans estimated to be living in the wild today, orangutans are considered to be an endangered species. While the Sumatran Orangutan is listed as critically endangered and the Bornean Orangutan as endangered, the greatest threat to orangutan survival is the extensive destruction of their habitat due to deforestation for logging, mining, settlements, palm oil plantations and cash crops. Up to 80% of suitable forest in Indonesia and Malaysia having been lost in the past 20 years. Other threats, which often go hand-in-hand with the destruction of the rainforest, are the illegal pet trade and poaching. Some experts say about 6,000 orangutans are disappearing every year and without our collective help orangutans could be extinct in the wild within our lifetime.

The Avaaz campaign to save the rainforest

A year ago, Avaaz put together a campaign and petition with over 1.3 million signatures to save the habitat of the orangutans – Indonesia’s untouched rainforests. At that time, the President of Indonesia responded to the petition by committing to save the remaining natural forests and peatlands. Now, the local government is once again considering the destruction of the rainforest.

“Palm oil, paper and mining companies stand to make money from developing this delicate ecosystem, and their pressure on the government to start cutting trees is working. But Europe holds the key to an even more powerful trade incentive for Indonesia, and experts say if the EU Ambassador speaks up now, he could protect the orangutans for good.” – Avaaz

Join with World Animal Protection Limited and support the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare

What is the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare?

World Animal Protection [previously World Society for the Protection of Animals] are spearheading the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare that calls for a global commitment to making the protection of animals a priority. The declaration would encourage governments to create or improve animal welfare laws, persuade businesses to protect animals, mobilise animal welfare supporters worldwide, and it would get people talking and thinking about animal welfare.

The World Animal Protection campaign

Animal cruelty and suffering is a global issue. Animals are sentient – they feel pain. Together, we can end their suffering.

“A sustainable future for the planet can only be achieved if both animals and people are part of the solution.”

World Animal Protection

World Animal Protection is working to get the rights of animals recognised, globally.

They recognise that animals have a right to live free from pain. They are helping the world see how important animals are to us – because millions of people depend on animals.

“Today we’re campaigning for a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare, and over 2 million people, 330 animal groups and dozens of governments have already pledged their support.”

You can help save the Renewable Energy Target!

In the news

In February of this year it was announced that there would be a review of the Renewable Energy Target. Greenpeace has been campaigning to call on the Government to dramatically increase its clean energy ambitions.

The benefits of renewable energy

“Millions of Australians are now powering their homes, businesses and farms with solar and wind power and pumping energy back into the grid. Australia is one of sunniest, windiest countries in the world — so it makes sense to use our natural resources wisely and sustainably.

People are choosing renewable energy sources over polluting coal and gas energy because they help them control their power bills and protect the environment. What’s more, this boom in the renewable energy industry has also created nearly 25,000 new jobs around the country, with 18,000 more planned in the coming years.

All this has been made possible by the Renewable Energy Target (RET) — arguably one of the most successful bipartisan policies of our time. Yet corporate interests are set to put this all at risk — and the culprit could be your energy company.” – Greenpeace

The Greenpeace campaign

Origin Energy, AGL and Energy Australia are pressuring our politicians to pull the plug on sustainable solar and wind energy policies. Greenpeace is working to send our energy companies and the Government the message that we support the Renewable Energy Target.

How you can help

With the RET currently being reviewed, Greenpeace and others are working to ensure the RET remains strong.

“The 2012 review found that the RET was effective and doing exactly what it was designed to do: helping Australians reap the benefits of clean, cheap renewable energy. But this latest review tribunal is headed by climate change sceptic Mr Dick Warburton. Other panel members have strong links to the fossil fuel industry.” – Greenpeace
