Join with Oxfam to end the emergency in Iraq

What’s happening?

In Mosul, Iraq, the lives of hundreds of thousands of people are at risk. In November 2016, a military operation to retake the city of Mosul from ISIS began. As the conflict continues into 2017, hundreds of thousands of civilians risk being caught in crossfire. Humanitarian conditions in the west of the city are deteriorating. Supply routes were cut off in November when the east of the city was being recaptured. A new offensive in the west of the city, which could start any day, could threaten the safety of 750,000 people trapped without any safe way to escape.

More than 10 million people — half of them children — are in need of humanitarian aid in Iraq. Across the country, ongoing conflict has displaced 3.4 million people.

Oxfam’s efforts

Oxfam are a global movement of people working hard to fight poverty and injustice. One person in three in the world lives in poverty. Oxfam is determined to change that world by mobilising the power of people against poverty. Oxfam’s ultimate vision is a just world without poverty. A world in which people can influence decisions that affect their lives, enjoy their rights and assume their responsibilities. A world in which everyone is treated equally. They work with partners and communities to find practical, innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive. Oxfam sees a future in which no one lives in poverty. Join their movement for change and help people help themselves in the fight against poverty.

Oxfam is scaling up its existing operation in Iraq to help respond to a new wave of families escaping. They have provided clean drinking water, hygiene kits, blankets and other vital aid to villages south of Mosul, where more people are likely to flee.

Join with Avaaz to stop corruption killing the Amazon

What’s happening?

Brazil’s leader is trying to sell huge chunks of protected Amazon forest to corrupt businessmen in return for political favour — the last was half the size of Germany! Together, we can stop any further sales. He’s already in crisis, suffering from unbelievably low approval ratings and under constant fire in the media for corruption and attacks on the environment.

Soon, he’ll be heading to the UN General Assembly to try and drum up a positive round of global press. Let’s ruin his plans by banding with Avaaz and showing up in NYC with two million signatures and a headline-grabbing stunt, and sending him home with only one option to save his political career: stop killing the Amazon.

Avaaz’s efforts

Avaaz empowers millions of people from all walks of life to take action on pressing global, regional and national issues, from corruption and poverty to conflict and climate change. The Avaaz community campaigns in 15 languages, served by a core team on 6 continents and thousands of volunteers. They take action — signing petitions, funding media campaigns and direct actions, emailing, calling and lobbying governments, and organizing “offline” protests and events — to ensure that the views and values of the world’s people inform the decisions that affect us all.

Add your signature to the cause and send your message to Brazil’s National Congress, the Special House Committee, and President Michel Temer;

“We demand that you listen to the appeal of the Brazilian people and stop, once and for all, passing laws, decrees, and any other irresponsible legislative measure to please the interests of powerful parties and politicians. This abuse triggers deforestation and the irreversible destruction of the Amazon rainforest, which is part of the shared heritage of humanity for present and future generations.”

Join with Greenpeace to tell Commbank to stop funding coal

What’s happening?

CommBank was the biggest funder of dirty fossil fuels in Australia in 2016. It is funding coal projects, which are putting our globally renowned Great Barrier Reef in grave danger. It claims to support action on climate change and keeping warming to below 2 degrees, but at the same time loan billions of dollars to fossil fuel projects that are polluting our world and making global warming worse.

CommBank has the power to help protect the Great Barrier Reef for our kids and grandkids by not investing in destructive coal projects. Instead of propping up the dying coal industry, CommBank can create new jobs in renewable energy and help transition our workforce to the industries of the future.

Greenpeace’s efforts

Greenpeace is an independent campaigning organisation that uses non-violent direct action to expose global environmental problems and to force solutions which are essential to a green and peaceful future. Greenpeace’s goal is to ensure the ability of the earth to nurture life in all its diversity.

Greenpeace’s core values are;

Independence: they do not accept money from governments, corporations or political parties because it would compromise their core values.

Bearing witness: their peaceful protests work to raise awareness and bring public opinion to bear on decision-makers.

Non-violent direct action: they strongly believe that violence in any form is morally wrong and accomplishes nothing. Greenpeace takes non-violent direct action at the point of an environmental crime to expose an environmental problem.

Join with Avaaz to be a lifeline for Yemen’s people

What’s happening?

In Yemen, every 10 minutes a child dies from malnutrition, 500,000 people have been hit by the worst cholera epidemic ever recorded — and a savage Saudi bombing campaign is cutting off all aid access. With the raging cholera epidemic and the rainy season coming, the people of Yemen need humanitarian aid now more than ever. Most of us have never heard of this nightmare because Saudi Arabia has blocked foreign journalists from the country. They want to keep the impact of their campaign out of the headlines — so that our governments can keep selling them tanks, missiles, and ammunition.

Avaaz’s efforts

Avaaz empowers millions of people from all walks of life to take action on pressing global, regional and national issues, from corruption and poverty to conflict and climate change. Our leaders are turning a blind eye to the crisis in Yemen. But Avaaz is unique — their money comes from ordinary citizens with no policy agenda. Together, we can be a lifeline for Yemen’s people.

Join with Amnesty International to call for the release of Tep Vanny from Cambodian jail

What’s happening?

Tep Vanny is a symbol of peaceful activism in Cambodia and is currently in jail as a result of her brave determination to defend the rights of others. She is a housing rights activist and for almost 10 years has been defending her community in central Phnom Penh where thousands of families have been forcibly evicted from their homes.

Along with her fellow activists, many of them women, she has been targeted by the authorities and harassed, beaten, arrested and imprisoned. The government are attempting to silence her voice and show activists like her what can happen if you stand up for your rights and the rights of others.

Amnesty International’s efforts

Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 7 million people who take injustice personally. They are campaigning for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. They investigate and expose the facts, whenever and wherever abuses happen. They lobby governments, and other powerful groups such as companies. Making sure they keep their promises and respect international law.

By telling the powerful stories of the people they work with, they mobilize millions of supporters around the world to campaign for change and to stand in defence of activists on the frontline. They support people to claim their rights through education and training.
