Join with Avaaz to help release Avaaz member Ozlem from Turkish jail

What’s happening?

Avaaz staff member, Ozlem, has been arrested in Turkey. She is being held without charges, along with 9 other people, after attending a meeting of human rights defenders. Ozlem and her friends are the latest victims of an ongoing crackdown by President Erdogan to silence his critics, who in just a year has locked up 50,000 people.

For years, Ozlem has worked so hard for a world where people can organise for peace, justice, and human rights without being sent to jail. She’s brought hundreds of Avaaz campaigns alive for Turkish Avaazers. Now she’s being held under threat of ridiculous armed terrorism charges! The closest Ozlem has been to any arms is the tear gas and the batons used AGAINST her in the countless times that she’s fought for justice.

Avaaz’s efforts

Avaaz empowers millions of people from all walks of life to take action on pressing global, regional and national issues, from corruption and poverty to conflict and climate change. The Avaaz community campaigns in 15 languages, served by a core team on 6 continents and thousands of volunteers. They take action — signing petitions, funding media campaigns and direct actions, emailing, calling and lobbying governments, and organizing “offline” protests and events — to ensure that the views and values of the world’s people inform the decisions that affect us all.

If we build a massive international petition and use the media to make Ozlem famous, she’ll be more trouble than she’s worth for a government in political crisis. Avaaz’s petition was just delivered to the EU foreign minister, but we need to keep the pressure up ahead of an upcoming EU summit with Turkey — so add your name urgently and let’s set Ozlem free!

Join with Amnesty International to protect Lolita Chávez and other Indigenous women

What’s happening?

Lolita Chávez is the Indigenous leader of the K’iche People’s Council (CPK), who work tirelessly to protect their traditional lands from mining, logging and hydroelectric interests. Lolita has been attacked and threatened for defending her people’s ancestral lands from logging in Guatemala, and now she fears for her life. In June, at least 10 armed men attacked Lolita and a number of other women, after they handed a potentially illegal logging truck over to the authorities.

These women have a right to protect their lands, and they must be able to carry out their peaceful work in safety and without fear. Indigenous women in Guatemala who speak out against powerful companies face enormous risks in the course of their work and significant challenges in seeking justice when their rights are violated.

Amnesty International’s efforts

Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 7 million people who take injustice personally. They are campaigning for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. They investigate and expose the facts, whenever and wherever abuses happen. They lobby governments, and other powerful groups such as companies. Making sure they keep their promises and respect international law.

By telling the powerful stories of the people they work with, they mobilize millions of supporters around the world to campaign for change and to stand in defence of activists on the frontline. They support people to claim their rights through education and training.

Last year, seven Guatemalan environmental defenders facing charges for non-violent protests against hydroelectric projects were released from jail after global pressure. We can work together to call on Guatemala to implement protection measures for Lolita and other CPK members now.

Join with Avaaz to help close the gay torture centres in Chechnya

What’s happening?

Chechnya is rounding up gay people and taking them to torture centres, and it’s as horrific as it sounds. Officials in Chechnya, a federal subject of Russia, have denied the reported “gay purge” and repeatedly claimed that there are no LGBT people in the predominantly Muslim republic, but Chechnya’s President said he would wipe out the area’s gay population in the next two weeks. Men are being electrocuted, tortured until they reveal names of other gay people, and beaten so badly that some have died. Police allegedly returned of the men to their families, exposing their sexual orientation and indirectly encouraging their relatives to carry out “honour killings”, causing many to flee to Russia still fearing retribution.

Activists fighting this brutal crackdown need more of our help, and fast. Targeting gay people and dragging them into prisons is like something the Nazis would do. It’s both terribly upsetting and infuriating, but there’s a plan to stop it. Avaaz will amplify the call of brave local activists in the media and use our massive global outcry to force an end to the crackdown.

Avaaz’s efforts

The underground rescue network that activists have thrown together is no match for the roving government thugs who round up “suspected homosexuals” and drag them to black sites to be tortured — and in some cases killed unless they reveal the names of their friends and lovers. Avaaz is helping save lives by funding safe houses, transportation, and legal representation, plus media coverage and campaigns against horrific laws.

Every day, more people face being rounded up — let’s show them the world won’t stand by while they are wiped out, then back local activists wherever these attacks take place to win the basic right to love whoever they choose.
