Join with Avaaz to save the elephants

What’s happening?

There are only 500,000 Elephants left, and with organized crime getting in the game, poaching has gone industrial, with 35,000 killed every year. We have to save these magnificently intelligent, gentle, and emotional fellow creatures from the horror of brutal genocide.

The biggest market for ivory is China, where people buy it for vanity reasons to show wealth and importance. But most Chinese don’t even know ivory comes from dead Elephants! They are also generally pop-culture conscious and superstitious. We can use that information to our advantage to save the elephants.

Avaaz’s efforts

Avaaz will run a massive, hard-hitting ad campaign in China with top chinese celebrities involved that declare ivory disgusting, uncool, and most effective of all, cursed. If Chinese people come to think of ivory as bloody, cruel and ‘suzhou’, or cursed, it will turn ivory from a vanity asset to an embarrassing liability.

Avaaz is a global web movement to bring people-powered politics to decision-making everywhere. Avaaz empowers millions of people from all walks of life to take action on pressing global, regional and national issues, from corruption and poverty to conflict and climate change.

Underlying Avaaz campaigns is a set of values—the conviction that we are all human beings first, and privileged with responsibilities to each other, to future generations, and to the planet.

You can join with Avaaz to help bring this campaign to save the elephants to life.

“We’ve run the concept by experts in Chinese culture and have high profile allies to help make the ads — now we need 50,000 of us to chip in the price of a drink or a meal to help rebrand ivory, quell the surging market for this genocidal product, and save our magnificent gentle cousins.” – Avaaz

Join with Oxfam and save lives with clean water

What’s happening?

Clean water saves lives. Almost 900 million people in the world do not have access to clean and safe drinking water, while 2.6 billion live without basic sanitation. Across the globe, more than 6,000 people die each day from diseases caused by dirty water — two-thirds are children. Unclean water, poor sanitation and unsafe hygiene practices have claimed more lives over the past century than any other cause – and this is continuing in many developing countries – making this one of the world’s most urgent health issues.

Women and girls from remote mountain villages in North Vietnam walk up to three hours a day to haul water back to their houses for cooking. Here in Australia we turn on our taps. Fresh, clean accessible water for drinking and for cooking. We all need it, only some of us have to go to the limits of human endurance to get it.

Oxfam’s efforts

Oxfam is providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene education in some of the world’s poorest countries. Oxfam’s water engineers and public health specialists are known internationally for the speed and efficiency with which they can help provide large-scale water supplies, essential sanitation facilities and hygiene improvements, even in the most difficult circumstances.

When disaster strikes, Oxfam acts quickly to saves lives by delivering clean water and sanitation — from simple solutions like distributing buckets, jerry cans, soap and water purification tablets, to building and rehabilitating water supply systems, providing tanks, delivering clean water and constructing toilets.

What’s happening?

Refugees around the world are fleeing the terror in their countries and trying to make it to safer ground. They’re running from violence just as vicious as the attacks that have shaken Paris, Beirut, and Bamako. Yet they risk becoming tragic scapegoats unless we act now. More than ever, thousands of women, men, and children are arriving at Europe’s doorstep — hungry, exhausted, sick… only hoping that someone soon will just open one door, and the nightmare they’re fleeing from will be over. But harsh weather is setting in, and the prospect of a chilling winter of death isn’t moving governments to act. On the contrary, they’re building more and bigger fences to keep refugees out.

Avaaz’s efforts

We remain the key source of hope for those trapped by Europe’s shameful walls. If enough of us each chip in a small amount now, we can fund the UN Refugee Agency project to protect and transport thousands of people stranded along the border in the freezing cold to safe centres, and campaign to help shelter hundreds of vulnerable refugee families throughout the winter.

“The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country.” – The UN Refugee Agency

Join with Greenpeace and help endangered Orangutans

What’s happening?

Forests are the lungs of the earth. The air we breathe, the stability of our climate and the rich variety of life depends on forests. They’re home to around two-thirds of all plant and animal species found on land and millions of people depend on them for survival. Without healthy, thriving forests, planet Earth cannot sustain life. Yet our forests are being destroyed at an alarming rate.

Greenpeace’s efforts

For months, forest fires raged across Indonesia bringing the world’s attention to the country’s devastating forest destruction. Both people and orang-utans were endangered as the fires raged and a thick, choking haze swept across Southeast Asia. These forest fires were a legacy of decades of destruction by palm oil and paper companies. Despite ‘no deforestation’ promises held by companies, forests are still being trashed.

Indonesia now has the highest rate of deforestation of any country in the world. A quarter of Indonesia’s forest has been destroyed in the last 25 years alone.  Plantation industries (that’s palm oil and paper companies to you and me) are the main drivers of this destruction. Almost 40% of deforestation between 2011 and 2013 happened in land used by these industries.  Deforestation is pushing the orang-utan closer to the brink of extinction, with 4% of what remains of the animal’s Indonesian habitat lost in just two years (2011 – 2013).

Greenpeace is campaigning to save the last remaining ancient forests and end illegal and destructive logging in our region. They’re exposing the corporations responsible for destruction, lobbying for an international funding agreement, showcasing sustainable forestry practices and empowering consumers to buy good wood.
