Join with Oxfam to help Bangladeshi families access clean water

What’s happening?

Some of the world’s poorest communities are found in Bangladesh, where access to clean water and toilets is scarce. Unclean water, poor sanitation and unsafe hygiene practices have claimed more lives over the past century than any other cause – and this is continuing in many developing countries – making this one of the world’s most urgent health issues.

In the Bangladeshi slum of Horijon Polli, lack of access to clean toilets and fresh water is the reality for many residents. The drains that line the slum’s streets are often clogged with human and household waste, and regularly overflow in the heavy rain. Polluted water floods the streets and people’s homes with raw sewage and rotting garbage. Children are at great risk of getting sick — even dying — from diseases like pneumonia and diarrhoea. They are forced to live and play in the filthy water. The situation is made worse because there is no reliable source of clean water in the slum. Families have no choice but to cook, clean and wash in the contaminated water.

Oxfam’s efforts

Oxfam’s efforts are finding ways to give Bangladeshi families access to clean water, hygiene and sanitation. They working hard to build and maintain clean water supplies in villages around Bangladesh, and to build new shower and toilet blocks in these communities that are affected by water-borne disease. With our help, Oxfam can make a huge difference to those most in need.

When disaster strikes, Oxfam acts quickly to saves lives by delivering clean water and sanitation — from simple solutions like distributing buckets, jerry cans, soap and water purification tablets, to building and rehabilitating water supply systems, providing tanks, delivering clean water and constructing toilets.

Join with Animals Australia and be the voice for baby animals

What’s happening?

In a world-first investigation, Animals International (the global arm of Animals Australia) has exposed the horror awaiting young animals, including unwanted dairy calves, as they are prepared to be exported from Romania, the biggest exporter of animals in Europe, and the biggest exporter of baby animals in the world. Torn away from grieving mothers, scores of babies are being forced onto crowded death ships bound for the Middle East.

Animals Australia’s efforts

Animals International’s ground-breaking investigations have spanned 16 countries — shining a spotlight on animal abuse, forcing government intervention, driving change and empowering individuals and communities to be active participants in the fight against animal cruelty.

In this recent investigation, Animals International found that young calves were taken away from their mothers at just months old. One by one, young dairy calves are sold into the global live export trade — an industry whose sole focus is increasing profits and meat consumption around the world. After being ‘fattened up’ in feedlots, animals are trucked to countries where shocking footage taken by Animals International reveals them being beaten, tormented, their tails twisted and broken, and their throats sliced open before being left to suffer slow and painful deaths.

Romanian sheep sold to the Middle East don’t fare much better. In Jordan, investigators found sheep from Romania being brutally killed in the street during the Festival of Sacrifice while other frightened animals were crammed into car boots only to face agonising slaughter in back yards.

Whether from Australia or Romania, these death ships that transport frightened and confused animals around the world just to be killed, serve one purpose only — to make rich companies richer. But it’s innocent animals paying the price.

You can take action today by signing this petition calling on Romania’s Prime Minister to stop the death ships and end Romania’s cruel trade in live animals.

Join with Avaaz to block Monsanto’s monster merger

What’s happening?

Two giant companies, Bayer and Monsanto, have agreed to a $66 billion merger to create one of the world’s largest agrichemical companies. There is fierce opposition in Europe to Monsanto’s use of genetically modified crops and its potent herbicide, Roundup, and the group Friends of the Earth have labelled the merger a “marriage made in hell”. “This mega corporation will be doing its best to force damaging pesticides and GM seeds into our countryside,” Friends of the Earth campaigner Adrian Bebb said in a statement.

Monsanto poisons our food and fields. Bayer kills bees with pesticides. If they merge, they will be a $100 Billion mega-corporation, dominating our entire global food system.

Avaaz’s efforts

Bayer and Monsanto are right now on a shopping spree for an army of lobbyists to steamroll the merger plan through US and EU regulators. It’ll take an even bigger people-powered lobby to stop them. That’s where Avaaz comes in. Avaaz has beaten both of these corporations before so they know how to do it: show massive public opposition through campaigns and polls, win over the regulators with powerful personal appeals, and have lawyers review every detail.

If 65,000 of us donate the price of a drink or a meal in the next 24 hours, we can launch this effort. Chip in to end this monster marriage before it begins.
