Join with Amnesty International to stop the torture of human rights defenders in Bahrain
The Bahraini authorities have started rounding up people that stick up for the rights of others in Bahrain, torturing and sexually assaulting them. Nabeel Rajab is one of those brave people speaking up. He’s been in detention for over one year and been kept for nine and a half months in solitary confinement, which amounts to torture. He was sentenced to two years in prison for giving TV interviews on 10 July. He’s also on trial right now for tweeting about alleged torture in a Bahraini prison and for criticizing the killing of civilians in the Yemen conflict. He further faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
Ebtisam al-Saegh is another brave person who speaks out for human rights in Bahrain. She was tortured, including by sexual assault, by members of the Bahraini National Security Agency on 26 May because of her work. She was arrested again on 3 July and there’s a high risk that she will be tortured again.
This kind of treatment has, of course, intimidated human rights defenders in Bahrain – and silenced many of them. It’s another risk for these brave people to face along with the usual threats, travel bans, interrogation and charges for participating in “illegal gatherings”.
