Join with Avaaz to help save the Vaquitas mammals from extinction

What’s happening?

Vaquitas are cute, timid aquatic mammals that look like mini-dolphins and there are only thirty of them left in the world. They have been dying because they get trapped in “gillnets” and drown. Gillnet fishing is a method of fishing where vertical panels of netting are set in a straight line in the water. Fish get caught in the gillnet by being wedged and held by the mesh around the body, being  gilled and held by mesh slipping behind the bones protecting the gills, or by getting tangled and held by teeth, spines, maxillaries, or other protrusions without the body penetrating the mesh.

Avaaz’s efforts

Avaaz empowers millions of people from all walks of life to take action on pressing global, regional and national issues, from corruption and poverty to conflict and climate change. The Avaaz community campaigns in 15 languages, served by a core team on 6 continents and thousands of volunteers. They take action — signing petitions, funding media campaigns and direct actions, emailing, calling and lobbying governments, and organizing “offline” protests and events — to ensure that the views and values of the world’s people inform the decisions that affect us all.

Mexico is considering banning these nets right now, and a key government official has agreed to deliver Avaaz’s call right into the highest government offices. If we act now, we can stop this beautiful species from being wiped out.

How you can help

Join with Avaaz and send your message to President of Mexico Peña Nieto, Minister of Environment Rafael Pacchiano, and Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries José Calzada:

“As citizens from around the world horrified that vaquitas could vanish from the face of the earth, we urge you to establish and enforce an immediate, permanent ban on deadly gillnet fishing in Mexico. As there are only 30 vaquitas left, we call on you to do all you can to save this beautiful species from extinction before it’s too late.”
