Join with Avaaz to stop the cruel practice of the pregnant horse blood trade

What’s happening?

Pregnant horses are being brutally tortured, hooked up to blood-draining machines in order to extract a profitable hormone. The industrial horse torture is driven by European pharmaceutical companies who use the blood to speed up factory farming –  hormones are sold to EU factory farms to make other animals, like pigs and cows, get pregnant faster.

Horses are impregnated, drained of blood, often forced to have abortions, then impregnated again. When their blood isn’t being drained, many are beaten with wooden boards, whips, and electric prods. It’s a sick cycle that sometimes only ends when the horse becomes infertile, or dies.

Avaaz’s efforts

Avaaz empowers millions of people from all walks of life to take action on pressing global, regional and national issues, from corruption and poverty to conflict and climate change. Avaaz is only five years old, but has exploded to become the globe’s largest and most powerful online activist network.

The EU has among the highest standards for animal welfare compared to other countries, so it’s shocking that pregnant horse blood is making its way into EU factory farms unnoticed. The EU has said it’s considering action, but so far nothing has happened. Avaaz has created a call to action to call on members of the EU Parliament, Commission, and Council:  ban the abusive pregnant horse blood trade.

How you can help

Join with Avaaz to ban the pregnant horse blood trade:

“We call on you to ban the import to Europe of any goods produced using techniques which are cruel and cause suffering to animals. As a world leader in animal welfare, Europe should apply its own standards to products it imports.”
