Join with Greenpeace to help save the reef

What’s happening?

Off the north-east coast of Australia, one of the world’s greatest natural wonders is at threat from the coal mining industry and in urgent need of your help.

If the coal industry gets its wish, huge coal reserves in central Queensland will be opened up for mining and millions of tonnes of seafloor will be dredged in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area to construct massive coal port expansions.

Hundreds more coal ships will pass through the Reef, heightening the risk of accidents and oil spills and negatively impacting coral at a time when the health of the Reef is already in decline.

The science is clear: we can have the Reef or coal, but not both.

Greenpeace’s efforts

The health of the Reef is already in decline – 50% of its coral cover has declined in the past 30 years.

At a critical moment for the Reef, the coal industry’s plans to export coal through the Great Barrier Reef to be burned in other countries will drive climate change – the number one threat to the Reef.

Climate change will increase ocean temperature and lead to acidification, which cause mass coral bleaching events and reef erosion.

People all across the world are joining the movement to save the Reef. This is a fight we can win. We’re on the right side of history. Together, we can turn the tide and save the Reef.

Supporting Greenpeace

Phoenix Rising For Children (PRFC) is an accredited out-of-home or foster care agency providing services in Sydney, including the greater metropolitan areas, Central Coast and parts of the Hunter region of NSW, Australia. PRFC was founded in 2001 to provide quality foster care to children and young people in NSW, including contemporary, quality, family-based foster care and effective and specialist support services to children and young people and their families. How you can help

The Abbot Point Growth Gateway Project (EPBC 2015/7467) will have unacceptable impacts on the outstanding universal values of the Great Barrier Reef. The science is clear: we can have the reef or coal, we cannot have both.

Together our voices can rise above those who want to put our Reef at risk.
