Join with Oxfam and power up against poverty

What’s happening?

Many countries around the world are harnessing the power of renewable energy. China is the world’s leading renewable energy investor, Bangladesh has the world’s largest solar home program, Brazil leads in wind power, Costa Rica achieved 100% renewable energy in 2015 and Samoa is well on its way.

Renewable energy is a cheaper, quicker and healthier way to increase energy access. Climate change impacts all of us, and as a wealthy developed country, Australia has a responsibility to tackle this important issue. Coal is a major threat as the biggest single contribution to climate change.

“The message is simple: if the Australian Government really cares about reducing poverty and inequality, it must shift its focus from coal and fossil fuels towards supporting renewable energy, both here and abroad.” – Oxfam

Oxfam’s efforts

Oxfam is leading the charge against coal with an action for a fair climate. They have compiled a report, Powering up Against Poverty, that debunks the Prime Minister’s statement that “coal is good for humanity.” The report explores the devastating impact of coal on communities, health and the climate. It outlines how renewable energy sources reduce poverty and improves lives in some of the poorest countries.

“The failure of rich developed countries to curb their carbon pollution by moving swiftly away from fossil fuels is increasing the risk of disasters like cylcones Haiyan and Pam, and the recent deadly heatwaves across India and Pakistan.” – Oxfam
