Join with Avaaz and stand with Adam Goodes
Adam Goodes is on the verge of retiring from AFL because he has been subjected to relentless racist bullying from crowds. Months ago, when a 13 year old in the crowd called him an ape, he called her out and had her escorted from the match. From that point onwards, Goodes has been booed whenever he is in possession of the ball.
Adam Goodes speaks out about racism in Australia and celebrates his Indigenous culture on the field and it is for these reasons that he has been booed for the good part of this whole year.
“Goodes’ recognition as Australian of the Year has given him a platform to confront racism in a very public way, but it would appear to have come at a personal cost. ADAM Goodes accepts that his stature as Australian of the Year and his desire to be outspoken about indigenous rights, makes him a lightning rod for racist attacks.” – The Australian newspaper
Avaaz are building a petition to send to Adam Goodes to show support for his struggle. We can all sign the petition to show our support for Goodes and to demonstrate that we will not stand for racism in our country.
“Our voices combined can tell the story of the Australia most people want — a country that values our cultural heritage and diversity — and inspire others to do the same.” – Avaaz

“As Australians of all ages and backgrounds, we applaud your courage and leadership in speaking out about the issues of race that still exist in our nation. We are deeply disappointed by the crowds that have booed you — they do not speak for us or for the majority of Australians who want to live in a country that values our Indigenous people and our cultural diversity.” – Avaaz
