You can help save the US national forest, Oak Flat
The US Government is about to allow a giant international mining company dig up a beautiful stretch of national forest held sacred by the Apache tribe. The area known as Oak Flat is part of Arizona’s Tonto National Forest, and the San Carlos Apache have used it for generations in young women’s coming-of-age ceremonies. In December 2014, a rider attached to a “must-pass” bill now gives sacred Native American land to a foreign mining company. The rider is attached to the National Defense Authorization Act and now serves to opens up National Forest land in Arizona to copper mining.
America has a long and disgraceful history of stealing land from Native Americans, but this is the first time that land has been stolen to give to a foreign corporation.
Apache protesters have been rallying in Washington DC, protesting Congress’ sale of their sacred Oak Flat to foreign mining conglomerates. Avaaz stands with Apache leaders as they fight for their land and are sending a message to governments around the world that indigenous lands and culture are not for sale.
“When US lawmakers with links to mining interests used devious tactics to grant permission for the mine, the Apache fought back. It’s starting to work — right now Congress is considering whether to stop the project.” – Avaaz
