Help stop the cuts to Aboriginal communities

The story so far

Global campaign network Avaaz is running a petition to stop the Australian Government’s cuts to Aboriginal communities. The government wants to shut down 150 remote communities and is cutting frontline services for Aboriginal people, and this will leave people with nowhere to go. The move is part of wide spread cuts to services that will harm the most vulnerable.

“Some of the most vulnerable people in Australia could be left without water and electricity, without a safety net and without basic services — unless we act now.” – Avaaz

The government has previously backed down on its most controversial policy ideas, like the medicare co-payment, due to sustained public pressure. With this issue now in the spotlight, due to the insensitivity of the comments by the Prime Minister suggesting that living in remote communities is a lifestyle choice, now is the time to push for action and stop the cuts.

“These people are actually living on their homelands and it affects a lot of things, it affects their cultural activities, it affects their native title, it affects a number of areas…It’s about their life, it’s about their very essence, it’s about their very culture.” –  Indigenous leader Noel Pearson

How you can help

Sign the petition now to stop the cuts to Aboriginal communities. When we reach 50,000 signatures, Avaaz will deliver the campaign to parliament together with indigenous elders from affected communities to bring the true stories of these cuts direct to decision makers.

“More than 40,000 years of connection to the land is not a lifestyle choice. We call on you to continue to fund essential services to remote communities in Western Australia and to restore funding to frontline services under the Indigenous Advancement Strategy.” – Avaaz
