Who is he?
Edward Snowden is an American computer professional who leaked classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA), starting in June 2013. Snowden’s leaked documents revealed numerous global surveillance programs, many of them run by the NSA and the Five Eyes with the cooperation of telecommunication companies and European governments. His disclosures have fuelled debates over mass surveillance, government secrecy, and the balance between national security and information privacy.
Where is he?
On June 23, Snowden flew to Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport. Snowden remained in the airport transit zone for 39 days, during which time he applied for asylum in 21 countries. On August 1, 2013, Russian authorities granted him a one-year temporary asylum. A year later, Russia issued Snowden a three-year residency permit. He lives in an undisclosed location in Russia and is seeking asylum in the European Union.
What’s happening now?
Snowden is now stuck in Russia, facing solitary confinement, ridicule, and life in prison if US agents grab him.
“Edward Snowden exposed the mind-boggling and illegal level of surveillance the US government is conducting on, well, all of us. His welcome in Russia runs out soon, and he’s got nowhere to go. But Brazilian President Dilma is angry at US surveillance and experts say she might brave massive US pressure to consider asylum for Snowden!” – Avaaz.org

How can we help?
If Snowden’s act of truth-telling leads to punishment, it sends the wrong signal to abusive governments and whistleblowers everywhere. We can send President Dilma the largest citizen-supported asylum bid in history by signing the petition.
“As citizens from around the world deeply concerned with the massive violation of our privacy, we call on you to grant asylum to whistleblower Edward Snowden. As the leader of a global movement for internet freedom and privacy, Brazil is the perfect home for a man who sacrificed his life to disclose invasive and illegal US spying.” – Avaaz.org petition
