Save the honey bees!

Billions of bees are dying off and our entire food chain is in danger.

The need for bees

“65 per cent of agricultural production is reliant on pollination by bees to produce fruit, vegetables and seeds and honeybees are coming under increasing pressure from urbanisation, bushfires, changing agricultural practices and changing land management practises.” – Chairman of the Pollination Program R&D Advisory Committee, Gerald Martin.

Bees don’t just make honey — they are a giant, humble workforce, pollinating 75% of growing plants.

What’s happening?

Around the world, the bee population is in decline. The bees are experiencing a phenomenon we call CCD – Colony Collapse Disorder, where bee hives are collapsing and many bee species are becoming extinct. Since 2006, there has been a drastic rise in the number of disappearances of Western honeybee colonies in North America, as well as in many parts of Europe – Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Ireland and Germany. In Australia too, thousands of bees are being wiped out. Pesticides are a cause of CCD.

“Multiple scientific studies blame one group of toxic pesticides for their rapid demise, and some bee populations are recovering in countries where these products have been banned. But powerful chemical companies are lobbying hard to keep selling these poisons.” –

What can we do?

Last year, an Avaaz campaign in Europe banned this group of poisons that multiple scientists blame for bees’ rapid demise. We can bring about a ban in the US. Right now chemical companies are furiously lobbying US authorities to stop action. But insider allies say a massive public mandate could tip the scales towards a ban.
