You can help stop the mass executions in Egypt
The situation in Egypt
A court in Egypt has sentenced to death more than 500 supporters of the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood. The sentence follows violence and rioting that broke out in the southern city of Minya last August. The riots took place after a deadly crackdown by security forces on two large sit-ins in Cairo, where demonstrators were supporting ousted President Mohammed Morsy, and a police officer was murdered. The semi-official Ahram Online news site said it was the largest set of death sentences handed to defendants in the modern history of Egypt.
Will the sentence be carried out?
CNN’s correspondent in Cairo, Ian Lee, has said he believes it was “highly unlikely” that all those sentenced to death would be executed. He said Egypt had a large appeals process and the country’s chief Islamic authority — the Grand Mufti Allam — also had to approve the death sentences.
“When you hear something like this, well it is shocking, but you do have to step back and say there’s a lot between the sentencing and the execution.” – Ian Lee, CNN’s correspondent in Cairo.
Avaaz takes action
Avaaz has setup a petition to send to the Grand Mufti to call on him to reject the decision of the courts. As Egypt’s most important religious figure, the Grand Mufti Allam is in charge of accepting or rejecting this decision, and has 10 days to decide.
“This was a political show trial — the military regime is using the firing squad to wipe out the opposition. If the world does not speak up, the consequences for Egypt and the world are beyond dangerous.” – Avaaz.org
